Global Conference for Media Freedom

The Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt and the Canadian Foreign Minister, Chrystia Freeland will host the Global Conference for Media Freedom in London on 10-11 July 2019. Special Envoy for Media Freedom and human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney will also attend.

The conference will bring together global leaders, shine a spotlight on media repression and build a coalition of governments committed to a stronger diplomatic response when media freedom is curtailed.

The UK and Canada are committed to promoting media freedom across the globe. It is an essential component of economic prosperity, social development and resilient democracies. It is a right to which all governments have committed, as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “the freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

There will be opportunities to interview the Foreign Secretary and the Canadian Foreign Minister. A full breakdown of media opportunities will be available ahead of the conference.
